SUMMARY:Tea 'n' Tales with the Guelph Guild of Storytellers
DESCRIPTION:Entering its 19th season. Tea ‘n’ Tales is a 14-week storytelling festival\, hosted by the Guelph Guild of Storytellers and the Guelph Enabling Garden. The audience is entertained with an hour of adult -oriented tales from tellers from across Ontario and from the US. Originally focusing on seniors\, the events are open to all\, although young children would find the stories complex. In advance of the tellers\, musicians\, choral groups and singers entertain the assembly from 10:00 until 10:30. While unpredictable\, Robert Munsch often attends and adds an impromptuy addition to our programme.\nFree coffee and treats are provided (you are asked to bring your own mug and lawn chair).\nWhile the event is free\, donations to further the projects of the two organizations are always appreciated.

SUMMARY:Military Lecture: From the Clouds: The 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion
DESCRIPTION:During the Second World War\, Canada fielded a battalion of super soldiers. They were the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion\, and as part of British 6th Airborne\, they served with distinction in Normandy\, the Low Countries\, and Germany. They were among the first to close the gap between the Allies and the Red Army in May 1945 – and they kept the Soviets from taking Denmark in what could be seen as the first move in the chess game that became the Cold War. \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. and the presentation starts at 7 p.m.\, followed by a question period. \nThe lecture premieres in-person at the Civic Museum. The recorded conversation will be available on YouTube\, and our Museum Everywhere Portal. Guelph Museums’ Military Lecture series is presented in partnership with the Laurier Centre for the Study of Canada. \nAbout the Presenter\nNorma Graham is a retired librarian with a decades-long fascination with military history. Since 2020 she has been studying Canada’s role in the Second World War. At retirement she decided to tell the stories of Canadian airmen\, soldiers\, and sailors that the world never knew and Canadians have largely forgotten. \nGraham has presented on several YouTube channels including WW2TV\, Homebrew History\, and Ham & Jam Airborne History. She recently gave her third presentation at the Canadian Military History Colloquium at Laurier. Graham has been published in Flightlines and Airforce magazines and recently co-authored a paper with Dr. Matthew Barrett which was published in Canadian Military History Journal. She also travelled to the UK in September 2025 and gave a presentation at the We Have Ways of Making You Talk Second World War Festival. \nIn September 2025 she returned to academia and is currently pursuing her MA in History at Laurier University.

SUMMARY:Transported – A Film Screening and Conversation with Newcomers to Guelph
DESCRIPTION:Transported – A Film Screening and Conversation with Newcomers to Guelph\nJoin us for an afternoon of stories and community as we celebrate the launch of the 2026 edition of Transported: Objects of Meaning and the Immigrant Experience\, a project that explores who we are and where we come from through the objects we carry.\nTransported features five short films\, starring newcomers to Canada who have chosen Guelph as their home. The participants\, E. Nguyen Dinh (Vietnam)\, Wranus Saleh (Afghanistan)\, Allie and Baylie (USA)\, Hussain (Iraq)\, and Alejandra Velarde Lopez (Mexico)\, share stories of personal objects that reflect their experience of migration\, survival\, innovation\, culture\, and identity. The premiere of the Transported films includes a conversation with the participants and snacks from their homelands.\nDawn Matheson\, creative director of the Transported project\, says that “the objects hold unique personal significance; they are more than a ‘thing’ — they represent memory\, legacy\, and part of a journey.” Following a screening of the short films\, Matheson will lead the participants in a conversation about their experiences.\nThe short films in the 2026 edition of Transported were directed and edited by Matheson\, with cinematography by Jhunren Baluyot and editing by Todd Buttenham. The project is a partnership with Matheson\, Guelph Museums\, and the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition\, supported in part by The Musagetes Fund\, held by the Guelph Community Foundation.\nThe first edition of Transported took place in 2017\, featuring stories and objects from Mwangi Wa Wairimu (Kenya)\, Oluwaseun Jilani (Nigeria)\, Amira AL Tahhan (Syria)\, Nicola Maggs (England) and Farshad Mazloumi (Iran). The project was directed by Dawn Matheson\, with cinematography and editing by Erin MacIndoe Sproule\, as part of the Guelph Film Festival’s “Hidden Histories” program\, in partnership with The Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition and Ed Video Media Arts Centre with funding in part from The Guelph Community Foundation.\nThe films and objects in the 2026 edition of Transported will be on view in the new Gathering Gallery at Guelph Civic Museum\, opening in early 2027.

SUMMARY:Wall-Custance Memorial Forest Open House Day
DESCRIPTION:The Wall-Custance Memorial Forest Open House Day is a day-long\, self-guided memorial\, held each year at The Arboretum on the third Sunday of September. The Open House includes musical moments in the Memorial Forest Grove throughout the day and an invitation to make a walking remembrance along the forest trail. One community tree is added to the Grove each year\, beside a plaque listing each person being honoured. Family and friends are invited to come and go on their own time to visit the new tree and remember their loved ones. In addition to the community tree\, another native tree or shrub is planted for each person in our ecological forest restoration areas. Since 1989\, over 20\,000 trees and shrubs have been planted in memory of loved ones. This grove and trails can be visited all year long. Individual names are also listed on the Wall-Custance Funeral Home & Chapel website.
