Jolly good: Enjoy superb afternoon tea right here in Guelph

Jul 11, 2024 | Guelph, Tastes

There’s nothing quite as comforting as a warm cup of freshly brewed tea to provide a pick-me-up on a sleepy afternoon. Add in a cucumber cream cheese sandwich or scone with a dab of clotted cream and jam and you’ve got the makings of a traditional British High Tea.

Jump on the Tea Trail right here: Guelph offers some lovely options to enjoy afternoon tea and pastry without the nuisance of the flight to England. Gather your tea-loving pals and plan to mark a few afternoons off in your calendar, because there is so much on offer, you won’t be able to choose just one spot.

Bar Mason at the Delta Hotel offers an exquisite Afternoon Tea service on selected dates. With an all-in price including your choice of expertly brewed loose-leaf tea and an assortment of decadent house-made sweet and savory treats, you won’t be able to have just one and will probably want to plan a later, lighter dinner. To add a little extra zip to your occasion, order a glass or wine or prosecco to sip alongside your tea.

For a spot of local history with your tea, make a reservation at John McCrae House’s Tea at 2 event with several options available throughout the summer. Guests can enjoy bottomless pots of McCrae private blend tea with scones, whipped cream, berries, and other sweet treats in the backyard gardens at the McCrae house museum.

Local favourite The Boathouse Tea Room offers a scenic riverside view with High Tea served daily from 9am-3pm for groups up to 20 people. Enjoy an assortment of hot or cold teas and traditional finger sandwiches (egg salad, cucumber cream cheese, tuna salad), a signature scone with jam & fresh cream and fresh fruit.

With a slogan as promising as “It’s time for tea” (isn’t it always?) we know we can count on a nice selection of curated choices at The Alley in Downtown Guelph. From bubble teas to traditional black tea blends, even the more selective tea lover will find something sip-worthy.

And if morning tea is more your style and only your own blend will do, BYO travel mug with your favourite cuppa and gather with others at Riverside Park’s Tea ‘n Tales. Every Friday morning in the summer, there’s excitement, anticipation, and a buzz as people gathered in the Enabling Garden at to watch performances by local and invited storytellers, some accompanied by music or puppets.
It’s always teatime in Guelph! Whether you’re after a quiet afternoon with a good book or to catch up with a group of besties, it’s easy to find a spot for High Tea. Wide-brimmed hats and raised pinkies optional.
