If you’ve been downtown recently, you’ve likely noticed ongoing construction throughout the core. This work is part of the City of Guelph’s Downtown Infrastructure Revitalization project; a multi-year investment focused on updating essential infrastructure and improving how the downtown functions long-term.
What the Project Includes
The construction goes beyond surface-level updates. Crews are replacing aging underground infrastructure like water mains, sanitary sewers, and stormwater systems, many of which have reached the end of their lifespan.
At the same time, the project includes road reconstruction, updated sidewalks, and improvements to streetscapes and public spaces.
Why It’s Being Done
This work is necessary to maintain reliable infrastructure and support future growth in the downtown core. By completing these upgrades now, the City is helping prevent larger disruptions down the line and ensuring the area can support businesses, residents, and visitors for decades to come.
What to Expect During Construction
Construction is being completed in phases to help minimize disruption. While certain streets or sections may be temporarily impacted, access to businesses and properties is maintained wherever possible.
You can expect:
- Temporary road closures or lane reductions
- Changes to pedestrian routes
- Signage and updates are in place to help navigate the area as work progresses.
Looking Ahead
Downtown businesses are still open! Whether you are already coming to Guelph to visit or want to support our local businesses, Downtown Guelph is waiting for you!
Once complete, the downtown will benefit from more reliable infrastructure, improved accessibility, and a refreshed streetscape. These upgrades are designed to support a more functional, accessible, and resilient downtown environment moving forward.
